A black ink pen and paper always at hand, Gérard Henry quietly explores Hong Kong to capture the essence of the city in his intricate, delicate, and highly detailed drawings. Through his compositions he offers us a vision of the city that is thoughtful, romantic, and poetic—timeless images, that will resonate with anyone who loves Hong Kong.
As a writer and an art critic publishing and editing magazines, books, as well as chronicles for the radio, Henry extensively documented the arts and culture of Hong Kong. He did not intend to become an artist himself. Henry started to draw to relax, as a form of meditation. But sketching quickly became a daily ritual in his life—an avid stroller and keen observer, he began to fill his notebooks with illustrated and written reflexions, musings, and contemplations. His images complement his writing to archive a place that runs deep in his veins.
This exhibition includes over sixty reproductions of Gérard Henry’s drawings, complemented by excerpts from his chronicles about Hong Kong and its intangible spirit.

PIPE DREAM - This third illustration in the Obsessions series charts the relationship between the man-made and nature in Hong Kong’s urban environment, reflecting on their symbiotic connection that exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and the strength that can be found in collaborations.
Julie Progin brought together diverse references to create Pipe dream for Latitude 22N, including traditional Chinese ceramic pattern of wan hua dui, ‘ten thousand flowers piled up’, as well as designs and systems present in Hong Kong’s urban landscape.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the resilience of nature in Hong Kong. It’s a common sight to see trees growing on facades where roots find moisture through concrete cracks or leaky PVC pipes that are external to the buildings of Hong Kong.
I’m equally moved by the resilience of the last traditional hardware shops in Hong Kong where they find creative solutions to display as much commodities as they can in their tiny ground floor spaces. The art of stacking, hanging, strapping objects together as a space-saving technique produces beautiful patterns and systems that inspire my illustrations.”

ADOPT A CREATURE - Creatures are spontaneously-made unique porcelain conversation pieces that you can choose to view as useful or ornamental. It’s all up to you.

Creatures are made intuitively, assembling parts cast from old moulds. The thought that was going through our minds down to our hands whilst making was “what if we created a vessel that ran away with our food?”. It made us laugh and we materialised it.

Adopt a creature and make sure you stroke it every now and then so it does not run away with your belongings.
