Shifting Objectives, M+ Museum, Hong Kong
Fragment(s) vase B takes part in the M+’s debut design exhibition – Shifting Objectives: Design from the M+ Collection – from 30 Nov 2016 to 5 Feb 2017.
M+’s debut design exhibition – Shifting Objectives: Design from the M+ Collection – explores the many concepts and frameworks that have shaped and broadened our understanding of design. Featuring dozens of key objects and works – from mid-twentieth century Japanese furniture, to familiar products from Hong Kong’s manufacturing heyday, to drones, ‘copied’ goods, and digitally-enabled and open-source practices – this groundbreaking show illustrates how design philosophies and practices have changed from the post-Second World War period until now. In so doing, Shifting Objectives outlines the growing contours of the M+ design collection, which is the first of its kind in Asia and a core pillar of M+.
A series of programmes—including workshops, talks, a studio visit, a teachers’ private view, and guided tours for the public, schools, and visitors with specific needs—accompany the exhibition.
In the run up to the opening of the M+ building in 2019, the M+ Pavilion functions as a temporary home for M+ exhibitions and events.

The Blue and white brunch
We spent this past November working on new collections and collaborations at our studio in Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain city of China. Our time there is mainly filled busying around, designing, making and getting dirty with clay. But being in Jingdezhen is also a time to be social, to sit down at the dinner table and chat with talented ceramic designers and artists from all four corners of the globe.
Our first Sunday was spent brunching at August and Guy’s home and studio. Former bankers, the pair setup shop in Jingdezhen to launch their brand called Spherebol. Their Jingdezhen design house is partly where they produce their gorgeous hand painted tableware and also their home. This make the place very special, filled with their own wares, prototypes and works in progress.
It is tradition for them to host Sunday brunches filled with laughter, wonderful guests, ceramic and tables laden with food. The studio is transformed into a busy kitchen where each guest prepares their contribution to what became a lavish table of food. The hosts even make their own bread.
We send our gratitude and admiration to all the talented ceramicists we met during this wonderful brunch with special thanks to August and Guy for the generosity extended to us.

Latitude 22N's berry financier recipe
Just in time for the holiday season, today is a start of something new on our journal. We launch a new inspirational column involving cooking, styling and eating. Yum! Making and designing ceramic dinnerware for our brand and for our lovely customers, we’re bound to love eating and cooking. Every piece of table and serving ware we design is tested for size and presentation before it goes into production. So naturally we cook and we try out our products at home. We don’t claim to be chefs, but we do love to share a good meal with friends, cooked with love and attention and we sure love to present it in style with nicely designed wares be it our own or some we’ve collected along the years. So get your aprons ready and enjoy our very first recipe.
Much love,
Julie & Jesse
Whilst Jesse has a sweet tooth and loves candies, we’re both savouries lovers. We don’t often bake or prepare desserts at home – only for our guests or to learn the chemistry involved in baking which is much like making ceramics. But we do have a soft spot for berries and this large financier is one of our favourite secret weapon to finish off a good dinner. It’s a piece of cake to prepare, it’s light, moist, yet a little crispy, and trust us, even if you’re full, you won’t be able to keep your hands off it.
The secret to a good financier is in the browning of the butter which gives it a delightful nutty flavour. Another tip is to begin cooking the cake in a very hot oven to make the crust and then reduce the temperature to keep the cake moist. The traditional financier comes plain but we’re sure you’ll love this berry-packed one.
Usually financiers are prepared as small rectangular loaves which resemble a bar of gold which is one of the many stories behind the name of the cake. We prefer to make large ones to share with friends and family. So today we decided to share our recipe with you along with images captured during our afternoon of dinner preparation.
FOR BERRY LOVERS
Any berry goes. Stuff the financier with those you love the most or a mix. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, currants will do just fine.
FOR GREEN TEA LOVERS
Scrap the berries and add around 60g of matcha green tea powder in the mix. It’ll be delicious served with berry ice cream or lemon jam on the side.
This recipe yields one large financier for about 6-8 portions. The preparation will take you around 20 minutes and the cooking time will be around twenty five minutes to half an hour depending on your oven. Use a, round, square or rectangular mould large enough so that when you pour your mixture in, it’s not higher then about 2.5 cm.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
200g of butter
4 egg whites
160g of icing sugar
60g of flour
80g of ground almonds
150-200 g of raspberries, blackberries or whichever you fancy
Alternatively you can even leave the berries and make it with green tea powder.
METHOD
Preheat the oven at 170°C
On very low heat, melt the butter in a pan until you get a “beurre noisette” or brown butter – amber color, smell of hazelnut, but don’t let it burn…
Lightly whisk the egg whites.
Mix the flour, icing sugar and ground almonds and then pour the mix onto the egg whites whilst continuing to whisk.
TIP
If you’re making the green tea version add the tea powder to the flour, sugar and almond mix.
Slowly stir in the melted butter and mix until all ingredients are well combined.
Transfer the mixture to a mould that you will have previously buttered, and then place your berries into the mixture.
Cook in the oven for 30 minutes or until the financier is golden brown.
TIP
Stick a knife in the cake; if it comes out moist and with dough on it then it’s not ready to take out of the oven. The knife needs to come out clean of any uncooked mixture.
Remove from the oven and leave the baked financier in the mould to cool.
Once cool turn the financier out on a wire rack and lightly dust it with sifted icing sugar.
We hope you’ll enjoy our very first recipe.
The Pollen Room
This sunday we celebrated mom’s birthday with a brunch at The Pollen Room, an event curated by florist extraordinaire Emily Baylis of June In March. It was hosted by and concocted by the oh so talented Mina Park of Sook and drinks were dreamed up by Anya Montague, the gifted cocktail designer behind Travelling Bartenders.
Here is our small feature of this cozy sunday, though we wish you could have been there in person to see, smell and taste. It was truly a wonderful experience.
We absolutely loved the colourful and poetic ceiling of flowers draping over Sook’s light-filled studio. The explosion of green with hints of red, yellow and white reminded us of spring’s splendour when flowers are blooming and the air is scented with freshness.
We were greeted with a light and refereshing cocktail named the ‘Meadowsweet’ – Lillet, pear, lemon, blossom honey and bubbles – and a colourful spread of savoury bites presented on Mina’s collection of wooden boards that is to die for.
The brunch involved tasty and tasteful botanical cocktails (The Nettle a mix of Scotch, Nettle leaf and Citric Fizz was our favorite) and both deliciously looking and flavourful creations by Mina inspired by her many travels and botanicals from around the world.
We’re grateful to the incredibly talented hosts that put together this delightful gathering. Bringing people around the table to dine, commune, laugh and share an experience together is everything we relish. Mom was over the moon !

About ‘CHINAWARE’
Carvalho’s design project ‘CHINAWARE’ is a porcelain collection created in Jingdezhen that features four series: ‘Barbowls’, ‘Pleasure Cups’, ‘Class Bowls’, and ‘Imperial Marker’. Each was inspired by day-to-day life and the traditional typologies of Jingdezhen; ‘Imperial Marker’, for example, is a set of porcelain vases unexpectedly colored using a Chinese felt marker commonly used to mark production defaults in porcelain factories. Within Carvalho’s work, the pen strokes represent the displacement of master craftsmen, their techniques, and traditional materials in the face of rapid development.
About BrunoMMCarvalho
BrunoMMCarvalho was born in Lisbon in 1975. From 2000 and 2003, he worked in the conservation and restoration of historic Portuguese tiles at the National Museum of Tiles in Lisbon. Between 2003 and 2005, he held artistic residencies at the New Artistic Trends Studies Center (CENTA) in Vila Velha de Ródão, Portugal. In 2006, in partnership with Portugal’s Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Caldas da Rainha (ESAD.CR) and CENTA, he created and initiated Experimenta O Campo, a residency program that matches students with Portuguese craftsmen.
Carvalho studied at ESAD.CR, graduating in 2007 with a Ceramic Design Diploma. That same year, he launched his eponymous studio. The studio has never had a physical base; instead, Carvalho develops open-ended, site-specific projects and objects within—and inspired by—the cultural and social contexts of different locations, including, as of this writing, Lisbon, Braga, Bogas do Meio, and the Azores Islands in Portugal; Eindhoven and Den Bosch in Holland; Berlin; and Jingdezhen, China. From 2007 to 2012, he interned and then freelanced for Maarten Baas’s studio in The Netherlands. Between 2010 and 2012, Carvalho created Made Out Portugal, a promotional platform for Portuguese designers living and working abroad.
The designer has exhibited his work at several respected institutions and events, including, but not limited to, Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM) (Luxembourg, 2014), Experimenta Design (Lisbon, 2008-2011, 2014), Dutch Design Week (Eindhoven, 2008-2011), Show Me Gallery (Braga, 2012 and Design Days Dubai, 2014), De Krabbedans (Eindhoven, 2010), and Villa Noailles Hyères, France (2008). Additionally, in 2014, Carvalho co-curated the exhibition Never for Money, Always for Love at MUDAM (Luxembourg) with Anna Loporcaro.
